Dear High School Counselors and Advisors, and PCC Perkins-funded Staff;
I would like to invite you to participate in the Fall Share Fair event where high school and PCC Perkins-funded staff can meet and share challenges, opportunities, and barriers for high school students in career and technical education classes in preparing them for their transitions to a post-secondary institution and their future careers.
This will be the first of two work sessions focused on building a community of practice for counselors and advisors at both the secondary and post-secondary levels. We will meet October 14 and plan for a November Check-In and an early spring Share Out session.
Our premise for this project is that PCC Perkins-funded staff deal with specific CTE issues around learning, college, and career challenges and barriers. The fall work session will be a three-hour guided discussion and work time around current challenges for both the high school and post-secondary students. The outcome for this session will be to develop an action plan of strategies, activities and resources the high school counselor can use in preparing students for post-secondary training.
We will have a check-in during the winter either via blog, e-mail or other technology that allows us to share where we are at without physically meeting.
The spring session will be to share successes and challenges that came out of the action plan. A PCC Outreach and Orientation Coordinator(s) will be invited to share orientation materials and resources with high school counselors. The outcome for the spring session will be new strategies that can be used in encouraging high school students to enter a high wage, high skill, high demand career and plan for their post-secondary education and training.
This opportunity is being funded by Perkins dollars that are targeted to student support services. This is a joint project between Portland Community College and PAVTEC. We are able to offer an $85 stipend and light refreshments for a Fall and a Spring Fair Share.
If you would like to participate, RSVP to Jacqlyn Proper at email@example.com, 971-722-7737 by Sept. 30, 2010.
Feel free to share the details of this exciting event with other staff who might be interested.
If you would like to help with the planning of this event, or have an idea for a guest speaker for either the Fall or Spring Fair Share, please call or e-mail me immediately.
Let me know if you have any questions.
